Hyper PlayStation 2's July issue (According to IGN) asked the staff of Final Fantasy Versus XIII why Final Fantasy XIII would not be as a brand new Final Fantasy XIV. Translated by IGN, Tetsuya Nomura answered:

"The concept and thinking behind Versus would not be possible in a standard numbered Final Fantasy title"

Yoshinori Kitase quickly assured that Versus is not a side-story, as it has some of what makes a numbered FF game what it is, and added:

"With Versus, we are trying out a type of adventure that we couldn't do in the numbered series."

Totalvideogames.com posted their interview with Hiromichi Tanaka (written by Jon Wilcox); man behind Final Fantasy III and the director of Final Fantasy XI.

After him discussing Square Enix's licensement of Unreal Engine 3 and their decision to use a common engine (announced a week before), TVG ask a question:

"So there's a greater chance that a 'Final Fantasy XIV' would be cross-platform?"

To which Hiromichi Tanaka answered:

"From a technical point of view, yes. That doesn't necessarily mean that we're going to be releasing cross-platform."

On this date, the 158th/June issue of Nintendo DREAM was released. It features an interview with Shinji Hashimoto. Although unrelated to Final Fantasy XIV, Hashimoto states that he wants Final Fantasy XIII to last for 10 years. From the translation by IGN on April 23:

"Different from something like VII, which we expanded upon afterwards, with Fabula Nova Crystallis FFXIII, we've thought about an expansive world setting from the start. Under the idea of wanting everyone to be sucked into the world for 10 years, we're preparing a number of categories." He likened this approach to films like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

Less reliable sources offer the quote differently, PlayStation Universe report on April 19:

"The story of Final Fantasy XIII lasts 10 years, which is a long period, like in the Star Wars saga or The Lord of the Rings."

...while Forever Fantasy report on April 19:

"The entire Fabula Nova Crystallis project will have the same world view and last approx. 10 years, which is a long period, like in the Star Wars saga or The Lord of the Rings."

It is unmentioned whether or not this will have an effect on future games, Final Fantasy XIV in mind. I'm guessing it might prolong Final Fantasy XIV's development and release, but with Square Enix now producing games like wildfire, it might not.
